rooted & resilient:

embodying self love and wholeness

8-week expressive arts and somatic healing circle for women & femmes of color

“Emotions are the gateway to the soul.”

—Malidoma Somé

In these times, how do we find the space to honor grief and loss?

How can we feel empowered and find constructive ways to channel fear, anger, and rage?

How can we stay connected to body and soul, and remember our birthright of wholeness and belonging?

the offering

a nurturing, sacred space grounded in deep support and practical skill-building

Connect deeply, process emotions verbally and nonverbally, and resource body, nervous system, and soul in the face of chaos and sweeping change.

We’ll cultivate these antidotes to trauma:

  • body-based practices for releasing stress and embodying ease

  • warm, welcoming space to show up exactly as we are

  • creative expression, intuition, and playfulness

  • authentic connection and beloved community

  • grounding ritual and meditation

  • intentional rest

We will build connection, resilience, and clarity around our unique purpose and path during these times, through a blend of therapeutic experiential exercises, expressive arts, embodiment practices, group sharing, personal reflection, guided imagery, and psychospiritual practices.

Self compassion, self trust, personal power, boundaries, slowing down, joy and magic are themes we’ll likely explore, and more based on group interest.

In caring community, let’s gather to see, be seen, and explore connection and compassion practices that can support the mind, body, heart, and spirit through difficult emotions and times.

“For too long have women and women of color been told to suppress their rage, suppress their grief, in the name of love and forgiveness.

But when we suppress our rage, that's when it hardens into hate directed outward, but usually directed inward. … All of our emotions are necessary.

Joy is the gift of love. Grief is the price of love. Anger is the force that protects it.

FAQs

  • This group is designed for Black, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latinx, Middle Eastern, and/or mixed ancestry women and femmes who are seeking to connect with themselves and others through creative expression and embodiment practices. This group is inclusive to trans and cis women, femmes, nonbinary folks, anyone who has been shaped by identifying as a woman or femme person of color/culture in the world.

  • This affinity space for women and femmes of color is intended to support social-emotional deepening and healing that I believe becomes more accessible when our nervous systems can experience a break from the many spaces and institutions that center and are dominated by white patriarchal culture and enactments. When multiculturalism and feminine energy (which I believe lives in all beings regardless of gender) are centered, we may more easily experience feeling seen and understood with less labor and hypervigilance.

Differences in lineages, cultures, and racialized experiences will not be glossed over, but encouraged to be acknowledged and held with curiosity, reverence, and compassion. We can learn so much from each other’s wisdom and struggles, and actively embody solidarity and love through relationship building and bridging across cultural differences.

  • A general flow for a group session could look like this:

    • Guided meditation, gentle movement, and/or other somatic practices for dropping into body awareness and tending to our nervous systems

    • Group shares: check-ins, group dialogue around theme of day, such as radical rest, anger and boundaries, grief and love, magic and joy, etc.

    • Expressive arts and/or journaling prompt and activity

    • Relational connection exercises and/or sharing in small group or pairs

    • Guided imagery or psychospiritual journey to connect with inner guidance or allies

    • Group harvest and shares

    • Closing circle and intentions for the week

Each session builds on the last, and the 8-week container supports building safety and connection between participants.

  • My hope is you might benefit in these ways:

    • Learn and cultivate self care, self compassion, and self love practices

    • Build community and connection with women of color

    • Strengthen emotional processing and communication skills

    • Experience creative release and empowerment

    • Learn and practice sustainable ways to soothe and care for your body, spirit, and nervous system

  • The financial exchange and investment requested for this group is $100 per session, or $800 total for 8 weeks. This amount honors the energy, time, and care that goes into creating this deep container for group healing and transformation, as well as logistical costs like rent.

There is also a one-time $20 materials fee to cover the cost of art supplies used during the group sessions.

Payment is via credit card, venmo, or zelle. Payment total of $820 due before the start of the group, or payment plans are available.

If you are feeling very called to the group, and the group fee is not accessible, please email me (jennifer.k.quan@gmail.com), and let’s connect about what is possible.

  • Though therapeutic and healing in focus, this is technically a support group and not a therapy group. This is a wonderful supplement to individual psychotherapy, which is recommended as there may be content or emotions that may be stirred up in the group that you might want more individual support processing outside of the group container.

There will be space and time to process verbally and nonverbally, individually and in the group. There will always be the option to pass on sharing in the group (though everyone benefits from everyone’s wisdom!). Strong intention and close attention will go to making sure the group feels resourcing and not draining (as I know firsthand some kinds of “group processing” can feel!)

  • No previous experience in art or movement needed – just a willingness to explore and share! Any guided instruction or prompts will always offer different options depending on comfort and ability level.

  • We’ll meet on 8 Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30pm from the dates April 8 - June 3. We will pause and not meet on April 29.

We’ll meet in person, at a private, beautiful, peaceful ceremonial space with indoor and outdoor space near Lake Merritt in Oakland. This special space was chosen specifically to support a deep experience of unwinding from the high stress and pressures of daily life and tolls of structural oppression, to drop deeply into the body and the collective healing container together. I’m seriously excited to share and be in this beautiful space together!

Since we will be meeting primarily indoors as a group, wearing a mask for health precaution is welcome but not required.

  • A commitment to payment for all 8 sessions is requested, regardless of any sessions that you may miss.

When you sign up and submit payment, your spot is saved for you. Change happens, so if you need to cancel your registration for the group and inform me by 4/1, you will receive a full refund. If canceling after 4/1, you’ll receive a refund minus $100, unless someone is able to take your spot. If someone else is able to take your spot, I’m happy to refund your full amount.

  • Wonderful! Please click here to fill out this interest form, and I’ll be in touch shortly. We’ll find a time to chat before the group starts, in order to make sure the group feels like a good fit for your needs and desires. I’m looking forward to connecting!
